5 Outdoor Gems to Explore Right Now

Ope, didn't see these coming, did ya? Here are five fantastic hidden gems you absolutely need to add to your weekend itinerary.

game room alley

1. Game Room Alley

Located right in the heart of Downtown Evansville, Game Room Alley was born from a simple but brilliant concept: “Let's meet but not eat.” It is an absolute blast of a hangout space. Stocked with games and comfy, movable seating, it is perfect for all ages. While you are dominating your friends at a board game, be sure to check out The Honey Machine mural by Tad Kaufman. It is un-bee-lievably cool! 🐝

upside down house burdette park

2. The Upside Down House & USI Burdette Trail

Want to literally turn your day upside down? Head over to Burdette Park and check out the Upside Down House in the Magical Garden. Designed by USI Professor John McNaughton, this topsy-turvy playhouse is a whimsical wonderland for kids and kids-at-heart. Once you finish marveling at the architecture, hop onto the USI Burdette Trail. This three-mile paved path connects the park directly to the university campus, offering a gorgeous, breezy hike or bike ride through our native river bottom land.

roofless church

3. The Roofless Church

Take a short drive over to New Harmony to experience a truly unique architectural marvel. Completed in 1960 by modernist architect Philip Johnson, the Roofless Church features a stunning curved parabola dome protecting a Jacques Lipchitz sculpture. The concept is wonderfully simple: the only roof big enough to encompass a world of worshippers is the open sky. It is a peaceful, awe-inspiring plaza that will leave you totally captivated.

4. New Harmony Labyrinth

While you are in New Harmony, you absolutely have to check out the local labyrinth. Originally created in the early 19th century by the Rappites, this intricately designed shrub maze was built for meditation and reflection. Navigating the winding path to the stone temple at the center is a symbolic (and surprisingly fun) challenge. It is admission-free and open year-round, making it a perfect spot to clear your head.

hartman arboretum

5. Hartman Arboretum

Nature lovers, you are going to fall head over heels for this one. The Hartman Arboretum is a lush, vibrant sanctuary dedicated to the diverse trees, shrubs, and wildlife of Southwestern Indiana. You can wander past 17 different kinds of oak trees and relax in gardens specifically designed to attract birds and butterflies. 🦋 They are open for visitors on Thursday mornings or by appointment, making it a perfectly peaceful mid-week escape.
