# Take a Hike: Fall Trails in the Evansville Region 🍂
## The Evansville Region has over 175 miles of trails to explore, and fall might just be the perfect time to hit them! 🍂
Cooler temps, changing leaves, and that crisp fall air make it hard to stay inside. So, dust off those hiking boots, grab a light jacket, and get outside! From wooded paths covered in fall color to riverside routes with some pretty great views, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season around the Evansville Region.
Whether you’re looking for an easy afternoon stroll or a longer hike to get those steps in, we’ve rounded up a few local trails worth exploring this fall. Pack a snack, lace up your shoes, and let’s hit the trail! 🥾🍁
## **Wesselman Woods **
At Wesselman Woods, you’ll find the largest tract of virgin, old-growth forest within any city limits in the United States, making it an especially beautiful place to explore once the leaves start changing. 🍂 Within the preserve and landmark are 12 different trails totaling more than 4 miles, with plenty of towering trees and fall color along the way. Bikes can be parked and locked at the provided bike racks,but are not allowed on the trails. Pets are also not permitted inside the preserve.
**Bonus Features:** Make it a full fall outing! Kids (and kids at heart) will love exploring the Arwood Family Treehouse in the Nature Playscape and the inclusive playground just outside the main entrance.

## University of Southern Indiana Trails
The [University of Southern Indiana](https://www.usi.edu/trails) boasts many miles of multi-use trails on its scenic 1,400-acre campus. We love the USI-Burdette Trail. The 3-mile scenic trail is perfect for hikers, bicyclists, and runners. It connects the beauty of the college campus to the picturesque Burdette Park.
## The Greenway Passage
[The Greenway Passage](https://www.evansvillegov.org/city/topic/index.php?topicid=235)is nearly 7 miles of 10-foot-wide paved trails that wind through downtown Evansville with views of Pigeon Creek and the Ohio River. The passage connects neighborhoods, parks, business districts, and nature areas.
## Harmonie State Park
[Harmonie State Park](https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/harmonie-state-park/) is located 25 miles northwest of Evansville and is a trail lover’s paradise with trails for walking, biking, mountain biking, and nature hikes. It’s known for its deep ravines, towering old-growth forest, and abundant wildlife, and is made up of 3,465 acres.
## Scales Lake Park
[Scales Lake Park](https://www.warrickcountyparks.com/scales-lake) in Warrick County is a 66-acre lake with a vast selection of outdoor activities, including mountain biking trails for every level of cyclist.
## Angel Mounds State Historic Site
[Angel Mounds State Historic Site](https://www.indianamuseum.org/historic-sites/angel-mounds/) is one of the best-preserved, pre-contact Native American sites in North America. Twelve earthen mounds, built for ceremonial and residential purposes, are scattered throughout grounds encompassing nearly 100 acres. The site also includes the incredible Angel Mounds Loop Trail which spans roughly four miles and will lead you to an unexpected slice of archaeological history and stunning scenery.
## The Rivertown Trail
[The Rivertown Trail](https://www.newburgh-in.com/copy-of-community-pool) is a multi-use greenway that extends from Angel Mounds State Historic Site to the new Locks & Dam Park along the Ohio River Scenic Byway. It travels right through the heart of downtown Newburgh along its riverfront. Restaurants and coffee shops along the way are the perfect rest stops!
## John James Audubon State Park
[John James Audubon State Park](https://parks.ky.gov/explore/john-james-audubon-state-park-7815) provides 6.5 miles of trails that wind through the nature preserve and vary in difficulty and length. The Eagle Glen Pet Trail is a one-mile trail where dogs on leashes are allowed with their owners.
